Center Theatre Group / Mark Taper Forum's second stage programming - Taper, Too - shuttered at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in the late 1980s. For three seasons starting in 2000, Taper, Too was resurrected at the Ivy Substation in Culver City and at Actors Gang Theatre in Hollywood. After three seasons, artistic director Gordon Davidson opened a permanent second space, the 317-seat Kirk Douglas Theatre, in Culver City in 2004.

For the first Taper, Too season in 2000, Chay Yew produced the world premiere of Luis Alfaro's Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Piñata Woman And Other Superhero Girls Like Me;  Roy Conboy's Drive My Coche, the world premiere of the sixteen playwright-project The Square (written by Bridget Carpenter, Ping Chong, Constance Congdon, Kia Corthron, Maria Irene Fornes, Philip Kan Gotanda, Jessica Hagedorn, David Henry Hwang, Craig Lucas, Robert O'Hara, Han Ong, Jose Rivera, Diana Son, Alice Tuan , Mac Wellman and Chay Yew); and Jerry Quickley's Night of the Griots.
